Our View of God One of our problems is that very few of us have developed any distinctive personal life. Everything about us seems secondhand, even our emotions. In many cases we have to rely on secondhand information in order to function. I accept the word of a physician, a scientist, a farmer, on trust. I do not like to do this. I have to because they possess vital information concerning the state of my kidneys, the effect of cholesterol, and the raising of chickens; I can live with this. But when it comes to the questions of meaning, purpose, and death, secondhand information will not do. I cannot survive on secondhand faith in a secondhand God. There has to be a personal word, a unique confrontation, if I am to come alive and be healed. We take on values, standards and our view of God from our parents, siblings, pastors and friends. Many times there is nothing wrong with this, but we need to be sure that it is our view not someone else’s view of God. In Ephesians 4:14 Paul says that “we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive.” There are two things that contribute to the seduction of Christians away from the faith. These are the natural instability of many persons who are captivated by novelty, easily misled, swayed by popular fashion. They are always under the influence of the last person with whom they talked. Then there are those who are deceived by the deceivers. The ones that lead weak Christians away from God on purpose. This is the reason we must develop our own view of God so that we will not be led away. If we are to be healed, we must develop our own view of God. This does not mean that this view will never change. This means that we study and pray and we let God do the changing. We need to have a biblical worldview. A worldview is a set of assumptions, which we hold consciously, or subconsciously about the basic make up of our world. A worldview is the framework from which we view and make sense of life and the world. Our worldview is how we view God. A worldview answers these questions. What is prime reality? Who is man? What happens to man at death? What is the basis of our morals? What is the meaning of human history? Who is Jesus and what kind of life did He live? Who is God? By prayer and studying we can develop our view of God. With our own view of God we can begin our journey toward healing.
