Sharing the Light and Love of God

to a Dark World

In the Beginning

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:1-5)

How we view God will affect our walk with Him. If we don’t see God as all powerful, we do not have the trust in Him that we should. This will affect our personal relationship with God.

Before there was anything, there was God. He was before space was formed. He was before anything. I don’t really understand how this was possible, but I do accept this as truth. I look at the stars and how large all of the sky is and my mind has a hard time thinking about this concept. The people who study space and what is going on in space tell me that space is not getting smaller, but that it is increasing. It is getting larger. I just don’t understand. Out of nothing God created space. I do not understand light-years and that it can take more than twenty years to travel to some of our other planets.

Yes, the God I serve is a big God. He is all powerful, He is all knowing, He is everywhere and He is as close to me as anyone can be. I find this very comforting that I serve a God that is that powerful. I have seen God do such mighty things in my life and in others lives. I have no choice except to believe in Him, to have faith in Him, to put my trust in Him. I have total trust in God because I know that He loves me. He loves me because I can feel His love each and every moment of the day. I know He loves me because He sent His Son to die for my sins. This God that is so big that I cannot even conceive of how large He is loves me.

“There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity. Other subjects we can compass and grapple with; in them we feel a kind of self content, and go our way with the thought, ‘behold I am wise’. But when we come on this master science, finding our plumb-line cannot sound its depth, and that our eagle eye cannot see its height, we turn away with the thought that vain man would be wise, but he is like a wild colt; and with solemn exclamation, ‘I am but of yesterday, and know nothing.’ No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than thoughts of God.” (J. I. Packer)

As we think of God we improve our minds and our walk with Him gets closer and sweeter. This scripture in John tells us that God is our light and our life. He is the light that shines in this dark world. We need to spend time in our thoughts and study of God. Knowing is important for living our lives.

There are five things about God that we need to build our foundation on:

  • God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation.
  • God is Lord and King over His world; He rules all things for His glory, displaying His perfections in all that He does, in order that men may worship Him.
  • God is our Saviour, active in sovereign love through the Lord Jesus Christ to rescue believers from the guilt and power of sin, to adopt them as His sons, and to bless them accordingly.
  • God is Triune; there are within the Godhead three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and the work of salvation is one in which all three act together, the Father purposing redemption, the Son securing it, and the Spirit applying it.
  • Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in trust and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Life must be seed and lived in the light of God’s Word.
