Introduction

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16)

The path out of darkness is through light. Jesus Christ is our light. If we accept Him as our Savior, we can come to the light.

“Through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the ways of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79)

Dayspring is one of the names given to Jesus in the New Testament. It means “New Dawn” and symbolizes light dispelling darkness and fear, bringing new hope and healing.

God has made the provision for our healing. He promises that He will restore our souls and lead us in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3) He sent His Son for our healing. He wants to lead us out of our darkness into His light and truth.

What does spiritual growth and healing mean? It means that we become more like Jesus Christ. If we are carrying around all of our baggage (old hurts and fears), we cannot become like Jesus. Our spirits are wounded and Jesus wants to heal our spirits. He wants to bring us to the realization that we can have a life filled with the peace that passes all understanding.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

Healing the wounded spirit is a process though which painful or traumatic memories are taken captive and made obedient to Christ. Under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, who guides the believer into all truth, we are able to uncover wounds and lies that have held a person captive in shame, guilt, or fear. Going back to the painful memory in the presence of the Risen Lord Jesus and letting Him speak the Gospel into the heart binging truth, healing, peace and forgiveness.

People, even Christians, are affected by what is said and done to them. Over the years, if hurtful words and actions are not brought into the light of Christ, they fester like emotional cancers. Eventually they surface in problems such as anxiety, depression, addictions, compulsivity, inability for intimacy, chronic anger, eating disorders, sexual confusion, etc.

Healing goes to the root cause of the symptoms. The Holy Spirit is able to pinpoint the source of the emotional affliction and speak the truth to the part of the spirit that is wounded or bound. As the healing occurs over time, people begin to realize that they are being freed from what held them captive.

While the healing does not change the hurtful things that happened, it does allow God to heal the wounded spirit.

The greatest cry of God today is to set His children free. He wants us to be free so we can worship Him. He loves us so much that our hurts, hurt Him also. This is His great love for us.

We come to God from a life of sin. Our lives are filled with brokenness, emotional scars, hurts and rejection. We are bound and imprisoned to many habits and thought patterns.  When we are born again, we receive God’s forgiveness and a new life with a new heart and are taken into His Kingdom. However, there are many areas in our life that have been destroyed by sin. These areas are in need of restoration and transformation by the Holy Spirit.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

The renewing of your mind takes place in two ways. First, by the washing of the water of the Word through having our mind bathed and saturated in the Word of God. Second, by the inner healing restoration of the spirit and the deliverance from anything to which the believer is held captive.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; he sent Me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.” (Isaiah 61:1-4)

The healing of the spirit by the Holy Spirit involves three main areas.

  • Healing of the memories – Binding up the broken hearted, setting at liberty those that are bruised.
  • Deliverance – Proclaiming deliverance to captives, the opening of prisons to those who are bound.
  • Breaking and renouncing of curses which are passed down from generation to generation – Raising up the former devastations, repairing the desolation of generations.

“He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells in Him.” (Daniel 2:22)

People who are mentally healthy bury unpleasantries but will go through their lives reacting to certain situations and not realize why. Deep in the mind is buried a memory that is distasteful which brings the reaction. Everyone has a reason for reacting the way he does. If we will allow the Holy Spirit, He will bring these memories to the surface so that they can be healed.

Our wounds have a symptom – pain. If we are to be healed of the wounds, we must change. Change can turn to spiritual growth.

But there are times when that pain is like a rock in our shoe  – bearable, but unimportant, as compared to the task at hand. Then after we remove it, its actual importance becomes clear. Now we see the deep impressions it has made, and almost immediately we feel the relief and freedom and regained agility when we remove the rock. We look at our wounds and blisters in disbelief that we could have denied their seriousness, or even their presence, and certainly their influence for so long.

But no matter the number of rocks that find their way into our shoes, the human spirit, once enlightened, continues to look up and hope and learn and delight in each lesson. The human spirit continues to choose and change – and continues to remove rocks, one by one.

Healing of the wounded spirit produces a different type person. As a person moves into transparency of the soul, into maturity of the Spirit, as the inner lake is cleaned and the old wounds and hurts are healed, the discontentment fades away and life with God here on earth grows more meaningful. To the person who has experienced healing, the world itself grows more beautiful, friends are friendlier, loved ones more precious, life more abundant, and he sees the face of God in every dew drop and hears His voice in every murmur of the breeze.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to show us how to live every day to its fullest, to usher us into the kingdom of God right here on earth. There is no need to wait until we die to experience the joy, bliss and security of heaven.
