1 Corinthians – Too Much Yeast

Posted on Posted in 1 Corinthians

“Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. So, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.” 1 Corinthians 5:6-8

Too much yeast will ruin the bread. What does yeast do to the bread? You put it in the dough, set it in a warm place, and the bread begins to rise. When it gets to a certain height, the bread is put in the hot oven. If the bread is allowed to rise higher and higher, the bread will be corrupt and rotten. Yeast is the sin in the church. If sin is allowed to stay in the church, at some point the church will be destroyed.

The Corinthian Church was boasting about what a wonderful church they had. They were closing their eyes to the sin in the church. They were bragging about their activities. They were bragging about sending missionaries. They were bragging about souls being saved. What hypocrisy. There are many folks who feel that being busy in Christian work covers a multitude of sins. Paul says that their bragging was not good.

Paul is saying, Let’s have sincerity and truth in the church. The church was very insincere. They had gross immorality in the church. They felt that they could get by with this, and they pretended that everything was alright. They were pretending that they were telling the truth and living the truth when they were not. With all the immorality in the church today, I believe that we are seeing the judgment of God on the church. Every Christian needs to be seeking God’s holiness and searching for the truth.
