Genesis – Trinity Part 4

“For the Lord is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his thoughts to mankind. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth. The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is his name!” Amos 4:13 God is the one that shaped the mountains and made everything and He did all of this as the Trinity. Lets look at a summary of the Trinity. The Trinity is not belief in three gods. There is only one God, and we must never stray from this. This one God exists as three Persons. God is not one person who took three consecutive roles. That is a heresy. The Father did not become the Son and then the Holy Spirit. Instead, there have always been and always will be three distinct persons in the Godhead. The Trinity is not a contradiction because God is not three in the same way that he is one. God is one in essence, three in Person. The Trinity is first of all important because God is important. To understand more fully what God is like is a way of honoring God. Further, we should allow the fact that God is triune to deepen our worship. We exist to worship God. And God seeks people to worship him “in spirit and truth”. Therefore, we must always endeavor to deepen our worship of God — in truth as well as in our hearts. Awareness of the distinct role that each Person of the Trinity has in our salvation can especially serve to give us greater comfort and appreciation for God in our prayers, as well as helping us to be specific in directing our prayers. While recognizing the distinct roles that each Person has, we should never think of […]

“Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 The doctrine of the Trinity does not divide God into three parts. The Bible is clear that all three Persons are each one-hundred-percent God. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each fully God. “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual power of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. (Colossians 2:8-10) We should not think of God as a “pie” cut into three pieces, each piece representing a Person. This would make each Person less than fully God and thus not God at all. Rather, “the being of each Person is equal to the whole being of God.” (Wayne Grudem) The divine essence is not something that is divided between the three persons, but is fully in all three persons without being divided into parts. Thus, the Son is not one-third of the being of God; he is all of the being of God. The Father is not one-third of the being of God; he is all of the being of God. And likewise with the Holy Spirit. “When we speak of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together we are not […]

“For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 As I wrote before, I don’t quite understand all that I know about the Trinity. The main reason that we have a problem with the Trinity is that we think in the physical world, but God lives in the spiritual world and to understand God we need to realize that God is a Spirit. The doctrine of the Trinity means that there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Stated differently, God is one in essence and three in person. These definitions express three crucial truths: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, each Person is fully God, and there is only one God. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons. The Bible speaks of the Father as God: “May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.” (Philippians 1:2), Jesus as God: “And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.”  (Titus 2:13), and the Holy Spirit as God: “Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.”  (Acts 5:3–4)  Are these just three different ways of looking at God, or simply ways of referring to three different roles that God plays? The answer must be no, because the Bible also indicates that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons. In […]

Genesis – Trinity

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 This one true God exists as three Persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I don’t really understand how God can be three persons in one, but I have to accept it by faith. I do believe that it is true. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” (Isaiah 55:8) This does not mean that one God manifests Himself in three different forms or that there are three gods; it means that one God exists in three Persons who are equal in their attributes and yet individual and distant in their offices and ministries. Though the word “trinity” is nowhere used in the Bible, the doctrine is certainly there, hidden in the Old Testament and revealed in the New Testament. Does this mysterious doctrine have any practical meaning for the believer today? Yes, because the three Persons of the Godhead are involved in planning and the execution of the divine will for the universe, including the plan of salvation. In the counsels of eternity, the Godhead determined to create a world that would include humans made in the image of God. The Father was involved in creation, but so were the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God didn’t create a world because He needed anything but that He may share His love with creatures who, unlike the angels, are made in the image of God and can respond willingly to His love. According to Ephesians 1:3-14, the plan of salvation is Trinitarian. We are chosen by the Father, purchased by the Son and sealed by the Holy Spirit, and all this is to the praise of God’s glory. Genesis – Who is this God?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Genesis

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 Just who is this God that created the heavens and the earth?  J.I. Packer wrote a book “Knowing God.”  In this book he writes, “The ignorance of God in both His ways and of the practice of communion with Him – lies at the root of much of the church’s weakness today. The modern way with God is to set Him at a distance, if not to deny Him altogether; and the irony is that modern Christians, preoccupied with maintaining religious practice in an irreligious world, have themselves allowed God to become remote.”  This is why we need to look at God in our way back to the basics. There are five basic truths about God. God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation. God is Lord and King over His world; He rules everything for His glory, displaying His perfection in all he does, in order that men and angels may worship and adore Him. God is Savior, active in sovereign love through the Lord Jesus Christ to rescue believers from the guilt and power of sin, to adopt them as His sons and bless them accordingly. God is Triune; there are within the God head three persons, the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit; and the work of savation is one in which all three act together, the Father purposed redemption, the Son securing it, and the Holy Spirit applying it. (more on the Trinity later) Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in trust and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Life must be seen and lived in the light of God’s Word. This and nothing else is true religion. […]

Genesis – Rejecting God

“This is what the Lord says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!” Jeremiah 6:16 This scripture tells us to stop at the crossroad and look around. This is what we need to do now. We need to look around us and see what is happening. We need to look at our lives, our community and our nation. What path are we going down? I am retired from the business world. The last few weeks I have had people calling me wanting me to get back in the business that I was in. I am telling them thank you for thinking about me but I have changed my life. I am not ready to stop doing things; I am ready to move forward with the next chapter in my life. I am ready to move forward for God. I am ready for what God has for me to do. We need to move back to the old pathways; the pathways that lead to God. This pathway is the only pathway that gives you rest for your soul. The problem today is we have rejected God. We have said, “God, we don’t need you, we can do it without you.” If you look around, you can see this is not working. The rejection of God is such a massive problem; I ask God just what am I going to do about this problem. I am only one person? His answer to me is, change your small part of the world. So if we all change our small part of the world, we can change the world. What is God telling you […]

Genesis – Who God Is

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Genesis

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 As we start to work our way back to the basics, we need to look at God and who God is. It is very important that we have this right concept of God in our minds. I don’t have any doubt about God and that He created the heavens and the earth. I don’t have any doubt about the Trinity, about that God is three in one. He is God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I don’t have any problem that the Bible is the Word of God, that the Bible is the most powerful book on earth. I have watched God do some of the most wonderful things in my life. At times I tell people the things that God has shown me and I know they look at me with doubt in their minds. I have messed up my calling more than once, but God never gives up on me. He just keeps on telling me what  my calling is and that I need to move forward with what He is telling me. I know that everyone doesn’t feel this way. On the day of Pentecost Peter stepped up and preached a great message and the scripture tells us that there were three thousand souls saved that day. Peter was preaching to mostly the Jews. He was preaching to people that knew about God and knew the scriptures.  Paul preached a great sermon in Athens and he was run out of town. The Greeks did not understand about God. They worshiped many gods. They did not understand that there was only one God. The God that created the world. This is why we need to get back to the basics. I understand God and I […]

Genesis – The Account of Creation

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Genesis

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 The Bible would be incomplete without the Book of Genesis. It sets the stage for the entire drama of redemption, which unfolds in the rest of the Bible. Almost all the important doctrine and teaching of the Bible have their foundation in Genesis. Genesis gives the foundation for the doctrines of: sin, the fall, redemption, justification. The promise of the Messiah and Jesus Christ. The personality and personhood of God. The kingdom of God. Genesis shows us the origin of: The universe. Order and complexity. The solar system. The atmosphere and hydrosphere. Life, man, marriage. Good and evil. It is precisely because people have abandoned the truth of Genesis that our culture is in such disarray. Martin Luther wrote, “I beg and faithfully warn every pious Christian not to stumble at the simplicity of the language and stories that we meet in Genesis. He should not doubt that, however simple they seem, these are the very words, works, judgements, and the deeds of the high majesty, power, and wisdom of God.” The only way we can ever really find out who we are is from God. The best place to start this search is in Genesis. Today’s Bible Reading: John 5:46-47, Luke 24:27

Genesis – The Basic

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 During a halftime pep talk to his discouraged team, Coach Vince Lombardi held up the pigskin and said, “This is a football.” Their performance had been so bad that he knew that he had to take them back to square one. He knew what all competent people have to know. If you want to succeed, you have to know and master the basis. We as the church have gotten so far away from the basis. I believe that God is speaking and telling us that we must get back to the basis of the Bible and who God is. There no better place to start this journey back to the basis than to study Genesis. The only way that we can interpret Genesis is to accept the fact that what it says is what it means. If we cannot believe the basis that we find in Genesis, there is no hope for man. If we believe in evolution and that we came from an amoeba, there is no dignity or honor in life. “There is a story saying that one day, students in one of Albert Einstein’s classes were saying they had decided there was no God. Einstein asked them how much of all the knowledge in the world they had among themselves collectively, as a class. The students discussed it for a while and decided they had 5% of all human knowledge among themselves. Einstein thought their estimate was a little generous, but he replied: “Is it possible God exists in the 95% you don’t know?” Genesis is the foundation Book of the Bible, and the rest of the scripture is built on what Moses wrote. Genesis is quoted or referred to more than two hundred times […]

Total Truth – The Big Bang

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Total Truth

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 The words in this scripture show that the existence of God is assumed right from the start. The heavens proclaim the glory of God. “The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.” (Psalm 19:1-4) This scripture declares that both space and matter were created by God. Genesis and the rest of the scripture will not give us an exhaustive view of all things that happened. But it will give us God’s plan to establish and after the fall to reestabish His rule over all He created. Genesis will start with a universal picture of creation but soon narrows to God’s chocie of a man and his family through whom He will work out His plan. This scripture depicts God creating this world. And He did it well and all by Himself. You might say the big bang was really the voice of God. The New Testament makes it clear that all things created were from God. “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.” (Hebrews 11:3) “God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.” (John 1:3) “That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out […]
