“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24 I started writing on the Apostle’s Creed because I see a world that is falling apart. I see a world that has no foundation. The church is not teaching people what they need to build their foundation on. In a Bible Study the other night, I mentioned the Apostle’s Creed and most of the younger people did not even know what I was talking about. To me this is sad, we have lost our young people because we have stopped teaching the basic. The Apostle’s Creed is not perfect because it was put together by humans, but it does give us a place to start getting a better foundation on what we believe. All of the Apostle’s Creed is taken from scripture. “Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79) This Dayspring is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. God sent His Son to earth to give us His light. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of a virgin. I have been asked why I believe this. I believe this not just because it is written in the Bible; I do believe that the Bible is the Word of God. I believe this because Jesus is with me every day. He walks with me and He talks to me. He gives me the strength to get up each morning and carry on His work. If we […]
“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.” Revelation 3:20-21 I believe that Jesus Christ is the Door to the Kingdom of God. This Kingdom is both on earth and in Heaven. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we enter His Kingdom here on earth, then at death we enter His Kingdom in Heaven and live with Him for all eternity. “Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.” (John 10:9) The door to a house is the first point of contact with that house. It is the way that you enter a house. Jesus is our first point of contact with the Kingdom of God. Many people are looking for peace and rest but they are at the wrong door. This door accepts anyone. Whatever your past, present, or future. Whatever your situation, no matter your age, your experience, it does not matter. This door is open for all that wants to walk through the door. There is no other way to enter the Kingdom of God except by Jesus Christ, the door. “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you […]
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12 I believe that Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. “The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:5). If Jesus is the light of the world and we are becoming like Jesus, that means that we are also the light of the world. It is the light of Jesus that shines through us that the world sees. We live in such a dark world and it seems to me that it is getting darker every day. Our light does no good if we keep it in the church building; our light must be out in the world letting others know about Jesus and His love. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matthew 5:14-15) The light of Jesus Christ can dispel the darkness of the human heart and it can show the glory of God. It is difficult to imagine a world without darkness, or sin, or sorrow, or pain, or lonely nights, or hard valleys, or long shadows. It is possible because God is a God of hope.
“Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35 I believe that Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life. Bread is necessary for us to live and be healthy in our physical life. Eating grain foods, like bread, plays an important role in our diet by providing many nutrients, such as dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals that are vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies. Jesus is the bread we need for our spiritual life. Without Jesus we will perish and die of hunger, our souls starve and there is nothing to nourish and fill us. Anything in life that takes the place of Jesus is nothing but junk food. Jesus tells us, “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.” (John 4:34) This is where our nourishment comes from. It is being obedience to God and His leading in our lives. “Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.” (Isaiah 55:2-3) How many people are laboring for food that perishes? It does not have to be that way. Jesus tells us come to Him and we will have the food that never perishes.
“And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.” John 17:3 I believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God that was sent to earth so that I can have eternal life. He was sent not just so we could have enteral life, but so that we could have the life here on earth that God means for us to have. I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. I believe that someday that all will bow to Jesus Christ and confess that He is Lord. “Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11) Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I believe in Him because He walks with me every day. He talks to me telling me how much He loves. He holds my hand as I go through the troubled waters. If the waters are too deep for me to handle, He carries me. I have never had a friend that is closer than Jesus Christ. Is Jesus Christ your friend? If not, you don’t know what you are missing.
“Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Mark 14:36 In the scripture, only two people call God Abba Father. It was Paul and Jesus. They both had a deep relationship with God. We as disciples of Jesus Christ, we can have that same relationship. This is the relationship that I want with God. When we hear the name Abba, we should realize that this is the God that knows our weaknesses and our strengths. It is the one that knows everything about us and still loves us. He knows your beginning and end. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He handcrafted our personalities. He is the one that allows us to meet Him on our own way never forcing His will on us. This relationship is so intimate that it can only be between the Creator and the created. I want to be so close to God that I can pray the prayer that Jesus prayed, not my will but your will. He knew us before we were born. “The Lord gave me this message: “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:4-5) Before we were born, He already had a place for us in His plan for the world. I know that we don’t always follow God’s will in our life, but He still loves us no matter.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 I believe in The Father Almighty Maker of Heaven and Earth. God created everything. He created it out of nothing. I don’t quite understand this, but I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is true. Not only did God create everything, He holds the world together. God could speak and the world would no longer exist. This powerful God that created everything and holds it all together is my Father. He is closer than my earthly father. My earthly father loved me and this I have no doubt about. God loves me even more than my earthly fathers could ever love me. God is my Abba Father. Abba is a name that shows a very deep close relationship. “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Mark 14:36) Jesus and Paul use the same name for God. One is the Son of God and the Savior for all mankind. The other was determined to destroy the belief about Jesus and who He is until Jesus changed his life on that dusty road to Damascus. The two men couldn’t be more different in the eyes of those around them, but in the eyes of God, they were created from the same cloth, closer than physical brothers as […]
“This is what the Lord says—Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies: “I am the First and the Last; there is no other God.” Isaiah 44:6 “I am the Lord; there is no other God. I have equipped you for battle, though you don’t even know me, so all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am the Lord, and there is no other.” Isaiah 45:5-6 I believe in God. I don’t believe in gods. There is only one God and He is a loving, powerful, caring God. For years I tried to fill that hole in my spirit with other gods. I didn’t call them gods at the time but they were gods. They were idols that I worshipped so they must have been gods. Satan would tell me that the sins that I was involved in would give me the peace that I was looking for. This was just another one of his lies. Some of the lies that Satan was telling me were true, but they were only half true. It was not the whole truth. Just as in Eden. Satan told Eve that if she would eat of the apple she would be just like God. Yes, Eve was created in the image of God so she was like God, but she would never become God. Then one day I found the true God. When I found the True God, the peace that passes all understand came over my life. I knew for sure that there is only one God. Believing in one God is the place that you can start this wonderful journey walking with God. Knowing the one true God is crucially important for living our lives.
“The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” Mark 1:15 Jesus is telling us that we need to believe the Good News. Just what is the Good News? Do we really know what the Good News is? Do we really believe the Good News? I believe that the only way that we can grow in our walk with God is to know what we believe. We need to also know why we believe. A good starting point is the Apostles Creed. The Creed was not written by the Apostles and it is not scripture. It is based on the Bible. In the next few devotions we will be looking at the Apostles Creed and the scriptures that the creed is based on. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (universe) church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And life everlasting. Amen
