“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So, let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:14-16
Hold firm! This is what the Book of Hebrews is all about. It is about us hold on to our faith in Jesus Christ. This book was written to Jews that were wanting to return to the temple and the old ways of the law. We need to hold firm because our high priest is in heaven. He is sitting next to God on the throne and He is making intersession for us with God. He can make these intersessions for us because He knows what we need to hold firm. He knows all of our weakness, because He has walked in our shoes yet He stood firm and did not sin.
If we hold firm until the end, our confession of faith, remembering that Jesus is our High Priest then we will have confidence and boldness to approach God on the basis of this faith. This is truly an amazing truth understanding the role that Jesus plays as our Savior and High Priest and letting this truth rewrite how we approach and relate to God. We can come before the throne of God every day as well as the last day with confidence because Jesus Christ is mediating before the Father. If Christ were not our great high priest, we could not stand before God. We would be cast from His presence for all eternity. And yet, no Christian lives under that threat. Righteous judgment has been replaced by radical mercy. Therefore, let not shrink from God’s presence and let us hold firm our faith.
