The Book of James – Enemy of God

Posted on Posted in The Book of James

“You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.  Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:4-6

The root of all war, internal and external, is rebellion against God. At the time of creation everything was in harmony. Then sin entered the world and led to conflict. How does a believer declare war against God? By being friendly with God’s enemy. James asked a question; do you not know that being friends with the world makes you an enemy of God. James is telling us that we must make a choice. Today we think that we can do whatever we want, be as worldly as we want and still go to heaven. This is not what my Bible tells me. My Bible tells me that I have to make the choice. “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.” (Matthew 7:21)

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) Paul tells us that we are not be conformed to the world. We don’t copy the things that the world does, we allow God to transform us to be this new person in Jesus Christ. Just what is being a friend of the world. It is forming our thinking as the world views life.  We put other things in front of God. We allow worldly things to get in the way of our Christin life. We make things of the world the center of our life, not God. God is a jealous god and He want us all to Himself. Think about what do you want to choose, life with God here on earth and eternity or the world that does not give us the peace that God can give us.
