The Book of Romans – The Holy Spirit Groans

Posted on Posted in The Book of Romans

“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.” Romans 8:26-30

God is concerned about every area of our life. He is concerned about our suffering and what happens to us each and every day. When Jesus was ministering on earth, He groaned when He saw what sin was doing to mankind. The Holy Spirit groans with us and feels the burden of our weakness and suffering. The Holy Spirit prays for us so that we might be led into the will of God. We do not always know what to pray for so the Holy Spirit intercedes so that we might do the will of God in our suffering. This is so true in my life. It seems that I never know what to pray about and how to pray. At times all I know to do is pray “God help me”. I know at that time the Holy Spirit will give me the peace to continue in doing God’s will. I know that the Holy Spirit will guide me in the direction that God wants me to go. I know that no matter what is going on in my life God will work it out for my good. The Holy Spirit shares our burden.

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Because of the Holy Spirit living in us and groaning for us can this scripture be true. The believer never needs to worry in times of suffering and trial because he knows that God is at work in the world and has it all under His control. God has the perfect plan. We have the freedom from discouragement because of the Holy Spirit living in us.
