The Gospel of John – Jesus and God are One

Posted on Posted in The Gospel of John

“So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.” John 5:19

Who is capable of understanding all the ways and workings of God? There is no creature on earth that can understand God. Even the angels cannot understand all His ways. “They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.” (1 Peter 1:12) This scripture in John is to prove that Jesus is the Son of God. He is saying that God and Him are one and that they are equal in all that they perform. When the Son exerts His Divine power, it is always in the conscious knowledge of the Father. It is this relationship that makes sense out of all that Jesus does. This conflict starts with Jesus healing the man on the Sabbath. The Jewish law allowed only God to work on the Sabbath. So Jesus claimed to be God and this infuriated the Jewish leaders, because Jesus was claiming to be God. The remainder of this chapter talks about the revelation that Jesus is God. We will look closer at this chapter in John.

If we are to follow Jesus and give Him control of our life, we need the reassurance that Jesus is God and that He can do what He promises. This is what the Gospel of John is about.
